CAPE TOWN - City of Cape Town firefighters have recovered a body in the Kuilsriver area believed to be that of a person who fell into the Highbury Canal during inclement weather on Thursday.

Teams from the Kuilsriver Fire Station made the discovery on Monday and alerted the South African Police Service (SAPS).

Over the past few days, the City of Cape Town availed its Fire and Rescue swift water rescue team, the Law Enforcement Marine and Environmental Unit and a drone.

"Our thoughts and prayers are with the victim's family while we wait for confirmation from SAPS. I want to thank everyone involved in the four-day search,” said Mayco Member for Safety and Security JP Smith.

“This was the second such incident in the space of a week in our city during a time when Cape Town has been grappling with the impacts of severe weather."

Smith is pleading with the public to practice caution.

"Also, this weekend, a man drowned after the vehicle he was travelling in became submerged in a wetland along Spine Road extension.

“Our waterways remain at capacity, and this will likely be the situation for a while still. I want to caution the public to please be incredibly careful at all times."
