JOHANNESBURG - Al Jama-ah leader Ganief Hendricks says ActionSA’s ploy to remove Kabelo Gwamanda as Johannesburg Mayor is personal and unreasonable.

ActionSA has expressed interest in working with the African National Congress (ANC) in Johannesburg on an issue-by-issue basis on condition that Gwamanda is recalled from the position.

Gwamanda was elected to the office in May 2023 through the backing of the ANC, Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) and minority parties in council.

The ANC, which supported Gwamanda's election as mayor, is now faced with the challenge of removing him from the city’s top office.

However, Hendricks believes there are no reasonable grounds to oust Gwamanda, suggesting he’s outdone himself in the mayoral office.

He claimed ActionSA’s call for Gwamanda’s axing is motivated by political point-scoring rather than its discontent with his performance.

“I can understand why they don’t want Gwamanda because they don’t want to be pursued. They committed crimes against the State.”

While ActionSA believes Gwamanda has done nothing to improve the City of Johannesburg, Hendricks said his party would accept any decision made by the ANC.
