JOHANNESBURG - The family of David Knox, who stands accused of murdering former heavyweight pro boxer, Mark Strydom, says they are innocent.
Strydom was shot dead by Knox at the Grand Slam sports bar in Edenvale on Saturday following a physical spat.
Knox appeared in the Germiston Magistrate's Court on Monday, where he was granted bail of R5,000.
Knox’s wife, Jacqueline, said they arrived at the Grand Slam sports bar on Saturday with their two sons.
She claims that Strydom, a well-known former pro boxer, confronted her husband and a fight broke out.
"Now we're being punished for somebody else who was there drinking the whole day and we were there innocently - we didn’t do anything. At the time of the whole altercation, we never knew who he was."
During the altercation, Strydom withdrew his firearm and fired several shots into the roof before Knox retaliated, fatally shooting Strydom twice.
"The Grand Slam is a bar. Why do they not have bouncers there to see who is coming in there and who's bringing guns in there and stuff like that?"
At the time of his death, Strydom was the owner of Striker Investigations.
Knox, a former cop and tow truck owner, will appear in court again next week.
