Johannesburg is rapidly decaying under the leadership of Mayor Kabelo Gwamanda, according to the Joburg Crisis Alliance, a coalition of several civil society organisations.

It says that service delivery is continuously declining and that the executive mayor has failed to intervene.

They place the blame for the city’s state of disrepair squarely on his shoulders and say he needs to resign.

Kleinhans says that people need proper leadership if Johannesburg is to recover and reach global standards.

He adds that it is not just the mayor that must resign, it is the entire mayoral committee.

He says organised communities must play a bigger role to ensure better oversight and accountability from those in power.
