CAPE TOWN - Eskom on Monday commemorated the 40th year of safe operations at Koeberg nuclear power station.
The celebration comes after Koeberg Unit 1 was granted approval to operate for an additional 20 years, until 2044.
Koeberg now joins 120 reactors worldwide that have safely continued operations beyond their initial 40-year life.
Eskom board chairperson Mteto Nyati said that Koeberg's 40 years of safe operation was a significant milestone.
Nyati said that the commemoration was also a celebration of good leadership and excellence.
"If you were to look at how we are operating this entity, we are always benchmarked with operating along with the best in the world and we always operate at the top of performance."
Nyati lauded Eskom's leadership for instilling continued discipline and having the vision to ensure the power plant can operate well into the future.
