CAPE TOWN - The City of Cape Town says nearly R6 million of its budget in the current financial year will be allocated to each ward to fund local neighborhood watch initiatives.

According to the city, the funds will help boost the fight against rampant crime.

This comes as the metro battles with gang wars in the Cape Flats.

The city's MMC for Safety and Security, JP Smith, said this funding initiative recognised the importance of mobilising residents to play a significant role in clamping down on crime in their communities.

"I am very excited about the added layers of training that will come in this financial year, and beyond. We have experienced good growth in the sector, but there is always room for more. I hope that communities who have not yet established their own structures will look at the support that is available, and what is being achieved in areas where watches are active, as motivation to establish and register their own neighborhood watches."
