JOHANNESBURG - South Africa's Air Traffic Navigation Service (ATNS) says it is working very hard to complete a compliance review of the country’s air navigation infrastructure and procedures.

The maintenance work has resulted in the indefinite suspension of flight operations to the George, Kimberley, Mthatha, Polokwane and Richards Bay airports.

On Friday ATNS notified aircraft operators of the service suspension.

It says in the interim, flights can be landed at the affected airports manually only if the weather allows.

"We are working very hard and in coordination with the civil aviation authority to ensure that restrictions as well as the suspensions are lifted," said ATNS chief operations officer Josia Manyakoana.
