The service has confirmed that she is recovering in a KwaZulu-Natal hospital following what it said was an assassination attempt on her life.

"Security is the view of our colleagues at SAPS [South African Police Service] and we do coordinate with them,” SARS spokesperson Siphithi Sibeko said.

“In cases where there are threats, the colleagues who are law enforcement agencies take a lead as far as those are concerned."
