JOHANNESBURG - South Africa's Air Traffic Navigation Service (ATNS) said the suspension of flights to the George, Kimberley, Mthatha, Polokwane, and Richards Bay airports is due to maintenance.

It said the maintenance is linked to a compliance review of the country’s air navigation infrastructure and procedures

The service said this process is unfortunately taking longer than anticipated to complete.

Chief Operations Officer Josia Manyakoana said contingency plans have been put in place.

“We are in the process of applying the necessary adjustments and remedies and submitting them to the CAA [Civil Aviation Authority] for approval and to eventually ensure that these suspensions and restrictions are lifted.”

Manyakoana added that if the weather permits, flights can be landed manually until a solution is found.

“As we speak, flights operating or wishing to operate under these restrictions will be restricted to operating visual conditions operations, which means if the weather at such airports is bad, or we have low clouds and reduced visibility, the flights will not be able to land at these airports.”
