JOHANNESBURG - The African National Congress (ANC) in Tshwane said that it was confident that its motion of no confidence in Mayor Cilliers Brink would pass, despite the numbers on paper being stacked against them.
The Democratic Alliance (DA)-led coalition government in Tshwane, which is led by Brink, currently holds a majority of seats in the capital city’s council.
In a media briefing on Friday, ANC regional secretary, George Matjila, said that there were examples in the past where councillors in the DA coalition had gone against the collective line for the sake of the city.
He cited the election of the late Dr Murunwa Makwarela as mayor last year when a few councillors in the DA-led coalition voted for him ahead of their candidate.
"We are hard at work doing that particular task to ensure once we put up the motion, it succeeds and we are able to install a mayor who will be able to help the people of Tshwane because it is not only about politics."
Meanwhile, DA chairperson in Tshwane, Jacqui Uys, said that the governing coalition remained united.
"In the previous round of Makwarela, the ANC didn’t hide they were paying people in order to vote for (them) and ActionSA, our coalition partner, also opened up cases for bribery at that time. I can’t take responsibility for any fraudulent activities that the ANC would want to do but I can say, as a coalition, we are secure and we have not had any indication from our coalition partners of anything else other than being committed to the rescue mission of Tshwane."
