DURBAN - KwaZulu-Natal police are investigating the shooting of a South African Revenue Service (SARS) lawyer linked to high-profile matters in Durban.

Advocate Coreth Naude was shot while driving in uMhlanga on Thursday.

SARS Commissioner Edward Kieswetter has termed the attack an attempted assassination.

Naude has been acting on behalf of SARS in the tax inquiry involving controversial businesswoman Shauwn Mkhize, also known as 'Mamkhize'.

She was driving into a hotel parking lot in uMhlanga on Thursday when two men opened fire on her car.

KwaZulu-Natal police spokesperson Robert Netshiunda said a case of attempted murder has been opened.

Meanwhile, Kieswetter has condemned the attempted assassination, saying it’s a shocking act intended to intimidate officers of the court.
