CAPE TOWN - ActionSA has expressed concerns about the uMkhonto weSizwe (MK) Party being an effective opposition in Parliament, citing a lack of experience.

Parliament has decided the MK Party is the official opposition party, as it has the most seats outside of the Government of National Unity (GNU).

Speaking on the sidelines of the Opening of Parliament in Cape Town on Thursday, ActionSA parliamentary leader Athol Trollip said the jury is still out on the MK Party.

Trollip said while the MK Party has in its ranks experienced politicians like former finance minister Des van Rooyen, there are a lot of fresh faces in their caucus.

“I listened to Des van Rooyen talking in a Treasury budget debate yesterday [Wednesday] as if he had landed in South Africa off the moon and he wasn’t here during the State Capture years.

“They are not good in opposition. They have never had any experience in opposition. They were good in government – big, large government doing as they please - so they are still going to have their mark. I haven’t seen them being good. I haven’t seen one constructive comment come from MK.”
