CAPE TOWN - The Special Investigating Unit (SIU) said it was in the process of collecting more than R112 million from beneficiaries who did not qualify to be funded by the National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS).
The SIU said that at least 421 students from various institutions had signed acknowledgment of debt agreements to pay back the money over a period of time.
The unit is tasked with investigating allegations of corruption and maladministration at NSFAS and to recover any financial losses incurred.
SIU spokesperson, Kaizer Kganyago, is urging those who received NSFAS funds unduly to come forward.
"In addition to the AODS, the SIU has made progress in recovering unallocated funds, with the University of Fort Hare being the latest university to pay back unallocated funds of R277 million. This brings the total of recoveries to just over R1.1 billion."
