CAPE TOWN - Western Cape Premier Alan Winde has urged President Cyril Ramaphosa to use his Opening of Parliament Address (OPA) to show citizens the Government of National Unity (GNU) prioritises their interests.
Winde said focus must be placed on revitalising economic growth to enable job creation.
Ramaphosa will on Thursday convene a joint sitting of both houses of Parliament to deliver the OPA for the seventh administration.
Winde said the address was a critical opportunity to set the scene for South Africa.
"I as the premier of the Western Cape would like to hear the president saying quite a lot around jobs and growth and how we are going to drastically reduce poverty in our country."
The Western Cape Premier is expected to lay out his provincial priorities for this term at the end of the month.
Winde added the government must make good on its commitments and pledges to citizens.
"We need to make sure that there's fair funding to specifically our big pressure areas of education and health. Because of lots of in-migration into the province over the last years, we need our fair allocation of funding for specifically those two but for the province in general."
The OPA coincides with the United Nations-declared Nelson Mandela International Day.
