Independent Media Group apologises for wrongfully claiming UKZN lecturer runs @Goolammv X account

JOHANNESBURG - The Independent Media Group has apologised for wrongfully naming a university lecturer as the owner of a controversial social media account.
On Monday, the company alleged that Mohammed Yacoob Vawda was Goolam-MV, known for posting problematic statements on the X platform, previously Twitter.

Vawda said the accusations had placed him and his family in danger.
Independent Media CEO Viasen Soobramoney explained that their investigations initially identified two people named Mohammed Vawda.
"During the press conference, a technical error occurred in that the wrong profile was shared with our content teams and the public.
"This error resulted in an incorrect identification of a UKZN [University of KwaZulu-Natal] lecturer and comedian being identified as the person behind the account. For this error, we unreservedly apologise to Mohammed Yacoob Vawda."
