DURBAN - Police are working on a crime scene where four suspected hitmen were shot and killed in Overport, Durban. 

Police said that the group is believed to have been on their way to carry out a hit on a businessman and his two bodyguards. 

But after trying to intercept them following a tip-off on their whereabouts, officers said that they were met with gunfire.  

A police forensic team is currently combing through the crime scene where the four suspected criminals were shot and killed by officers. 

The bodies are still lying in the vehicle they were travelling in at the time of the incident. 

A fifth suspect was also injured but survived.

Police spokesperson Robert Netshiunda: "The suspects defying orders to stop, sped off, shooting at the police and a shootout ensued. Their vehicle crashed against the wall and all of them were shot and fatally wounded."

Police have so far recovered one firearm from the car.
