JOHANNESBURG - Tax collector South African Revenue Service (SARS) says it has earmarked at least R4 billion more in tax refunds as the 2024 filing season picks up momentum.
Filing season officially opened at the start of the week following a two-week pre-season auto assessment window.
More than five million taxpayers were auto-assessed during pre-season while close to 200,000 people have filed their returns since Monday.

SARS Commissioner Edward Kieswetter says more than R10 billion in refunds has already been paid.
“For many of you, the payment of a refund is a lifesaving event and we commit ourselves to do so without any undue delays. But we also ask that you help us to make sure that your account and your file with us are up to date and that all past issues have been resolved.”
He said tax compliance was important for service delivery and the provision of social services.
“We remind ourselves that the poor and the most vulnerable among us would be destitute without our work.”
