CAPE TOWN - Cederberg Mayor Ruben Richards said that bodies were piling up at morgues because the town was cut off due to storm damage.

A section of the R303, which is the only way in and out of the town, washed away after a river burst its banks amid recent heavy rains.

In June last year, the same access road from the N7 highway into the town was washed away by floods.

Richards said that he'd been approached by mortuary businesses that were unable to conduct funerals because they could not cross over to the other side of town.

"The mortuaries don't have any more space for the bodies because it's a small town, and now what do you do? The funeral undertakers have approached me to say: 'Hey, Mr Mayor, what are we going to do? We can't go in and out of the town.'"
