JOHANNESBURG - The South African Revenue Service (SARS) says the tax filing season is off to a good start.

Filing season officially opened on Monday, following a two-week pre-season auto assessment window.

SARS commissioner Edward Kieswetter briefed the media in Cape Town on Tuesday, where he gave an update on day one of tax season.

He said almost 2 million taxpayers logged onto the SARS e-filing system, although fewer returns were completed during that period.

"Yesterday [on Monday] 190,000 returns were filed, of which 183,000 were filed digitally and 7,700 were filed via our tax service centres around the country. This is great because it means a lot of you didn’t have to brace for the cold and spend time in our queues in order to fulfil your legal obligations."
