CAPE TOWN - The South African Police Service (SAPS) will recruit 10,000 new boots on the ground for the 2024/2025 financial year.

Police Minister Senzo Mchunu revealed the plan during his maiden police budget vote speech on Tuesday.

However, while Mchunu has listed his priorities, opposition parties have rejected the budget, saying the department had lost the fight against crime.

Mchunu tabled the R113 billion budget, saying that capacity and police visibility would be a key priority.

"We need to enhance police visibility in the country as a priority so that we show the whole country that here are the police."

But Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) MP, Mbuyiseni Ndlozi, rejected the budget, saying the police had failed year after year.

"Twenty-seven thousand five hundred murders in South Africa under so-called peace conditions. In Gaza, where there is a war and genocide, 38,000 people killed. You have lost the war against crime."

The MK Party rejected the budget, with parties like ActionSA calling for an increase in the budget for crime intelligence and less money on VIP protection.
