DURBAN - Relief efforts are continuing in the fire-gutted Kenville community, north of Durban.

It's been a week since the blaze destroyed around 100 homes and left over 300 people destitute in the area.

Over the last week, parts of the province also battled with veld fires, which destroyed tribal land, farms, and livestock and claimed 13 lives.

Government officials, including KwaZulu-Natal Premier Thami Ntuli, conducted an oversight visit in the area on Tuesday morning.

Social Development MEC Mbali Shinga said that they would be providing more relief throughout the week with the help of other organisations.

"Sadly, we lost a pregnant female in the fire in this area. Communities are displaced but as the Department of Social Development, we are on site to offer psychosocial support, but also SASSA has been able to provide meals - they started providing meals last night, and breakfast this morning."
