JOHANNESBURG - Newly-appointed Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (COGTA) Minister Velenkosini Hlabisa, says the time for no government intervention in badly-run municipalities is over.
Hlabisa said the department has many intervention options available to it, including placing municipalities under administration or dissolving the council.

Considering that a majority of municipalities are governed by the African National Congress (ANC), the Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP) president says he does not believe this will be an issue.
Hlabisa said the foundation of the Government of National Unity (GNU) is to ensure that the country works better.
“All the political parties in the GNU are committed that we want to see a national, provincial and local government that is working. I am very confident with sufficient evidence provided, with all the documentation of how far have we tried to intervene but it all doesn’t work – there will be an easy way to say let us go and allow people to elect people who will deliver services. On that one we have a common approach because we want a local government that will work for our people.”
