CAPE TOWN - While the South African Democratic Teachers Union (SADTU) in Western Cape supports the decision to close most schools in Western Cape on Thursday, it's calling on the department to extend the closure to Friday.
The Western Cape Education Department has decided to close all public schools in Cape Town, Cape Winelands, Overberg, and some schools in the West Coast Districts Municipality for Thursday only.

However, the department said all other schools in the remaining districts would remain open, and closures will be done on a case-by-case basis.
"We support that as SADTU because we also called the department to consider closing schools for the remainder of the week. I'm sure they want to assess the situation for Friday," said the union’s provincial secretary, Sibongile Kwazi.
Education MEC David Maynier said any call to close schools on Friday would depend on the weather.
"All schools are expected to open on Friday, 12 July 2024. We will, however, evaluate the weather prediction for the end of the week to determine whether any individual school closures are necessary on Friday."
