JOHANNESBURG - As Equal Education calls into question the nomination of corruption-accused MP Zizi Kodwa’s nomination to the Basic Education Portfolio Committee, the African National Congress (ANC)'s Chief Whip Mdumseni Ntuli said it was not a promotion nor in violation of the party’s step-aside rule.

Equal Education has released a statement condemning Kodwa’s nomination, claiming it’s an insult to learners in the country while highlighting the importance of ethical governance.

MPs are being nominated to various sub-committees in order to effectively play their role of oversight.

Kodwa is currently out on bail for graft charges amounting to R1.7 million linked to state capture.

Ntuli said Kodwa had not been given an endorsement.

"He is simply a member. By virtue of being a member, he has to occupy a membership of a portfolio committee as well, otherwise portfolio committees, some of them might not have a quorum. That assignment is not necessarily a promotion or violation of the ANC rules on step aside" said Kodwa.
