Parliament to continue process of electing chairs for National Assembly and NCOP committees

On Tuesday, both houses of Parliament finalised the election of house chairpersons and office bearers as the seventh administration gets down to business with budget briefings.

CAPE TOWN - Parliament will on Wednesday continue the process of electing chairpersons for key committees in the National Assembly and National Council of Provinces (NCOP).

On Tuesday, both houses of Parliament finalised the election of house chairpersons and office bearers as the seventh administration gets down to business with budget briefings.

Some of the notable elections are of former Presidency spokesperson Khusela Sangoni, who now chairs the Communications and Digital Technologies Committee.

Supra Mahumapelo, who was initially nominated as house chairperson but was later removed, returns to chair the International Relations Oversight Committee.

The National Assembly on Tuesday only managed to elect chairpersons for about 16 committees, with the remainder expected to be elected on Wednesday.

Some of the elected chairs include former health deputy minister Dr Sibongiseni Dhlomo, who returns for another stint as chairperson.

The Democratic Alliance (DA) also managed to get its own member of Parliament (MP) Leon Basson elected to chair the Water and Sanitation Committee.

Joe Maswanganyi also returns as Standing Committee on Finance chairperson following his election.

Wednesday will see the election of the Standing Committee on Public Accounts (SCOPA)’s chairperson, a position conventionally given to smaller parties.
