DURBAN - Newly-elected eThekwini mayor, Cyril Xaba, has vowed to accelerate service delivery.
Xaba, a former African National Congress (ANC) Member of Parliament, was elected unopposed as mayor on Wednesday.
He takes over a city with various service delivery issues including, lack of water, aging infrastructure and the contamination of beaches by high levels of e.Coli.
The metro municipality was recently placed under intervention.
For some time now, service delivery has been a major challenge in the city and this has sparked several protests.
Delivering his maiden speech in council, Xaba said tackling service delivery was top of his agenda.
“In the next few days, we will be meeting with all service delivery units to streamline our plans to clean the city, rehabilitate our roads, fix streetlights, maintain our sports facilities and parks, build houses, and deal with water and sewer leakages.”
Xaba added that he was no stranger to public service and vowed to deliver on his promise.
