CAPE TOWN - The City of Cape Town's Human Settlements MMC, Carl Pophaim, said that he had written to his national counterpart, Mmamoloko Kubayi, to again request that the emergency housing grant be immediately devolved to the metro.
He said that when the city managed the grant, it was able to respond to emergency housing requirements within 24 hours, but now residents waited for months.
Amid the current storms, Pophaim said that they had issued around 4,500 flood kits and the need was likely to rise.
"Our teams are on the ground and will continue to assist residents as best we can, fundamentally getting their details, to process it through to Pretoria in order to access the grant. We will continue to engage residents and I will be on the ground, supporting our communities as best we can."
