DURBAN - The eThekwini council is expected to elect a new mayor to replace Mxolisi Kaunda on Wednesday.
Kaunda was recalled at the end of May to serve in Parliament’s National Council of Provinces (NCOP).
In the council meeting in June, the council failed to elect a new mayor as expected due to what was described as outstanding issues.
Speaker Thabani Nyowose said officials from the Electoral Commission of South Africa (IEC) and the chief magistrates responsible for the swearing in of members were not available.
He added that the absence of a mayor had no impact on the municipality proceedings.
Eyewitness News understands that the African National Congress (ANC) fielded Cyril Xaba, a former member of Parliament.
