JOHANNESBURG - The African National Congress (ANC) in Ekurhuleni is mum about the future of its tumultuous relationship with the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) in the municipality.

Tensions between the two organisations escalated after Mayor Doctor Xhakaza fired the EFF’s Nkululeko Dunga from the finance MMC position last month.

At a media briefing in Germistion on Wednesday, ANC regional coordinator, Doctor Xhakaza, weighed in on the party’s turbulent relationship with the EFF.

The ANC and EFF, who’ve been co-governing Ekurhuleni for over a year, are not seeing eye-to-eye on the running and division of power in the municipality.

The EFF’s Nkululeko Dunga was publicly critical of the ANC's decision to strip him of some powers before he was dismissed from the finance portfolio.

Xhakaza refused to comment on the party’s relationship with the EFF but insisted that he would not tolerate underperforming members in his mayoral committee.

"We still have the relationship, we have not pronounced what needs to happen. However, if there are areas of underperformance, our people must come first."

Xhakaza said that Luthuli House was expected to brief the ANC’s regional structure on the future of its relations with the EFF.
