KZN govt assessing impact of damage caused by runaway fires

DURBAN - The KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) government says it’s yet to determine how many houses, livestock and farms were affected by runaway fires in parts of the province.
The devastating fire - which affected the northern part of the province - reportedly started in communities under the King Cetshwayo, uThukela and uMzinyathi districts on Sunday evening.
The blaze further spread to other districts within the.
Many people were left homeless. Livestock and farms were also affected as the inferno swept through the region.
The KZN Cooperative Governance Department said the extent of damage is unclear at this stage.
Spokesperson Senzelwe Mzila explained: “The full extent of the damage is unclear at this time and disaster management teams are on the ground assessing the full extent, residents are urged to be cautious as inclement weather conditions are expected in the province during this week.”
The disastrous fire comes a month after a tornado wreaked havoc in the oThongathi area, north of Durban.
