JOHANNESBURG - The Gauteng Department of Education said it’s making headway in the implementation of remedial recommendations of the Mayibuye Formal Report.

The report by Public Protector Kholeka Gcaleka found that there were several issues with the construction of the R82 million Mayibuye Primary School in Tembisa.

The school was built within 500 meters of an area saturated with water and has been dormant since its construction in 2017.

Provincial Education MEC Matome Chiloane briefed the media in Midrand on Tuesday on the commencement of online admissions for grades 1 and 8 learners for 2025.

Chiloane reiterated the department’s commitment to implementing the recommendations in the Mayibuye Formal Report.

This, after the Public Protector ordered the provincial Department of Education to provide a progress report on measures it has taken to rehabilitate the wetland.

The department is accused of building the school near a wetland without the necessary environmental authorisation.

"We are the custodians of schools, so that’s why we are brought in."

The R98 million facility has been vacant for years because of a sewer pipeline running across the school grounds.
