JOHANNESBURG - Kaizer Chiefs will play Tanzanian giants Young Africans SC in the inaugural Toyota Cup match that will be played in Bloemfontein on the 28th of July.

The pre-season competition is certain to attract a high level of interest and curiosity as it will see newly-appointed Amakhosi coach Nasreddine Nabi lead his new team on South African soil for the first, and it will be against his former team, with who he won two league titles.

Football fans in Bloem are in for a feast as the match between Chiefs and Yanga will be preceded by a legends match between former players of the Glamour Boys as well as those of Bloemfontein Celtic.

While the attention, at the launch of the competition on Monday morning, was initially on the new event, there was also confirmation of Nabi as the new man at the helm after a string of unsuccessful appointments over the past few years.

Chiefs Marketing Director, Jessica Motaung, indicated what made the Tunisian coach stand out among A number of candidates, from around the world, for the position.

“There were a number of factors that we looked at. His passion for the game, his passion for Kaizer Chiefs and his understanding of the African space and his professionalism,” Motaung said.

Nabi has a proven track record of success, and many Chiefs fans will be hoping that he will have an immediate impact on a club that is thirsty for success. The Amakhosi trophy drought has lasted nine whole seasons at this stage and a 10th would almost certainly be unbearable for their supporters.

While optimistic about the investment they made in Nabi, his assistant coaches and support staff will pay, Motaung cautioned for a little bit of patience as a return to the club’s glory days and lasting success would require Nabi to lay the groundwork for victory first.

“One thing we learned is that patience is important. We have, at times, made decisions in a hurry and we learned from them. This is the one time I can say to our supporters that we want sustained success and for that we’re laying the right foundation; we need to do that together and we need to give the team time,” said Motaung.

Tickets to the first-ever Toyota Cup are officially on sale across all TicketPro outlets in South Africa from as little as R40. Fan attending the game stand a chance to win a brand-new Toyota Corolla Cross XI CVT worth over R400 000.
