JOHANNESBURG - The Department of Women, Youth and Persons with Disabilities (DWYPD) has offered psychosocial support for the family of an elderly woman who was videographed being assaulted allegedly by her grandson.
The video of the alleged assault has made rounds on social media, invoking public outcry from organisations and political parties.
Police have since arrested a 19-year-old man, who is due to appear at the Kuilsrivier Magistrates Court in the Western Cape on Friday.
The spokesperson for the ministry of women, Cassius Selala, said the department reached out to the elderly woman and her family.
“Since then, DSD [Department of Social Development] has assigned social workers to the family for psychosocial support. Abuse of an older person occurs when any person, in a relationship where there is an expectation of trust, does something or fails to do something that causes harm or distress or is likely to cause harm or distress to an older person.”
