JOHANNESBURG - City Power has called on backyard businesses to register with the utility as it clamps down on illegal connections.

This follows a cut-off operation of 15 foreign-owned spaza shops in Eldorado Park on Thursday.

The utility has now deployed security teams to patrol the area to ensure that those customers do not reconnect the power illegally.

It said backyard businesses are proving to be a major concern.

Spokesperson Isaac Mangena said, “Illegal connections and meter tampering are among the most contributing factors to the network overload, often leading to a high number of transformers and mini substations getting damaged and destroyed.”
