The State has argued that the teenager be kept separate in the hospital section of Pollsmor Prison.

According to the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA)’s spokesperson, Eric Ntabazalil, Gqaza needs 24-hour supervision.

“Something we supported as well because he is suicidal. The court has been told that he is suicidal, so he will be referred to the hospital section of the Pollsmor Prison.”

Gqaza emerged from the court's holding cells to a courtroom filled with members of the public.

He faces charges with assault with intent to cause grievously body harm and will be back in court on 12 July 2024 for a bail application.
