CAPE TOWN - The case against a 19-year-old man accused of assaulting his grandmother has been postponed.
Luvo Gqaza appeared in the Kuils River Magistrates Court on Friday on charges of assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm.
Gqaza was arrested on Wednesday after a video went viral this week showing the teenager slapping his grandmother.
In the social media footage, Gqaza can be seen physically assaulting his grandmother after having a verbal altercation with her while she was preparing food in the kitchen.
While the incident occurred a month ago, police say the family refused their intervention.
Following social media outrage, Gqaza was subsequently arrested on Wednesday at his home in Wallace Dene, Kraaifontein and has since been charged.
During his court appearance on Friday, the defence requested that the accused be isolated at the hospital section of Pollsmoor Prison.
The National Prosecuting Authority (NPA)’s Eric Ntabazalila said they support the request citing that Gqaza needs 24-hour supervision.
"Something we supported as well because he is suicidal, the court has been told that he is suicidal so he will be referred to the hospital section of the Pollsmoor Prison."
He will be back in court on 12 July for a bail application.
