JOHANNESBURG - A 19-year-old man has been arrested for assaulting his grandmother in Kraaifontein in the Western Cape.

Social media footage shows the man physically assaulting the elderly woman after having a verbal argument with her, while she was preparing food in the kitchen.

Police said the incident occurred a month ago but the woman and the family refused police intervention.

According to police, the family agreed to deal with the matter privately.

Police spokesperson Andre Traut said: "The severity of the matter was realised when a video of the incident was circulating on the internet, and on this basis, SAPS intervened and opened a case docket on behalf of the victim."

The man was arrested on Wednesday night and will make his first court appearance once he has been charged.
