JOHANNESBURG - Technicians are working to restore power to areas affected by a fire along the M1 highway in the Johannesburg CBD.

The fire, which broke out in the area on Wednesday, has left large parts of Braamfontein and Parktown West in the dark.

The city said preliminary investigations suggested the incident occurred during maintenance work under the M1 bridge.

In May, a similar incident occurred in the same area, resulting in widespread repair work.

"It is suspected that the disruption was caused while a service provider was undertaking work beneath the M1 bridge following the extensive fire which damaged the bridge in May 2024. We are urging our residents to be patient,” said City of Johannesburg spokesperson, Nthatisi Modingoane.
