CAPE TOWN - The call for better firearms control is being amplified by yet another month of deadly gun violence.
In June, there were several mass shootings in various Cape Town suburbs, resulting in at least 18 deaths.
Gun Free South Africa said that on average, 31 people were shot dead in South Africa every day, while the country has nearly 500,000 illegal firearms on the streets, with only around 9,000 reported stolen or missing.
Gun Free SA director, Adele Kirsten, is calling on communities to get involved in the fight against illegal firearms.
"Perhaps there's three most important actions that are required: one, is to get guns out of circulation. Two, is to create the conditions which reduce the demand for guns, and three, is to ensure that communities are involved in their own safety, making their own communities safe."
