He joined the Tshwane club as co-head coach with Manqoba Mngqithi ahead of the 2020-21 season, before taking sole charge on 24 October 2022 during the 2022-23 season.
During that time, he won seven trophies in four seasons, including four league titles, a Nedbank Cup title, an MTN8 title and the inaugural African Football League.
In a statement, Sundowns said the decision "was taken by the board, taking into account the objectives and expectations of the club and was not influenced or based on the recommendation of any individual associated with the club".
This comes after reports on Tuesday claimed his working relationship with sporting director, Flemming Berg, had broken down and was impacting their approach to the transfer window.
The club added that they were deeply committed to the development and growth of South African coaches and players.
While the club have not provided clarity on who will lead the team for the 2024/25 season, they’ve handed Mngqithi and the technical team the reins to take control of the training and preparation of the players as pre-season begins.
It’s expected to be another busy year for the Brazilians, who will be one of four African clubs representing the continent in the historic FIFA Club World Cup 2025.
