Power outage sees case against IEC officially charged with contravening Electoral Act postponed

DURBAN - A power outage has forced the court to postpone the matter of an IEC officially charged with contravening the Electoral Act in Kwazulu-Natal.

Musawenkosi Mnikathi was meant to appear before the Pietermaritzburg Magistrate's Court on Tuesday for his case but proceedings were halted.

According to the Msunduzi Local Municipality, two faulty cables caused an outage in the area.

Mnikathi will now return to court next week for his contravention case.

This as he could not stand in the dock as all proceedings were suspended.

The municipality said that its technicians were still working on restoring power but did not estimate a deadline.

Mnikathi is accused of transporting voting material in his car, without any police supervision.

Court officials said the matter was now expected to continue next Tuesday.
