JOHANNESBURG - The Department of Health says there’s some reprieve for almost 900 medical interns who have finally been placed on the mid-year cycle.

This is a short cycle meant to manage the placement of applicants who could not be allocated space during the January 2024 intake.

This means a total of 885 health professionals, including doctors, nurses and pharmacists will now undergo their medical internships and community services.

Health spokesperson Foster Mohale:

“The department has concluded the allocation process and has been informing all successful applicants of their allocated provinces and health facilities where they are scheduled to commence their duties from 17 July 2024.”

The placements come amid a longstanding crisis in the sector, with scores of young professionals struggling to get jobs at public facilities.

“The department has tried to place the applicants according to their preferences, unfortunately, it is impossible for everyone to be placed according to their choice areas and provinces of preference due to limited posts in some areas.”
