CT doc sentenced to 12 years for selling, distributing R5m worth scheduled meds

CAPE TOWN - A Cape Town doctor has been sentenced to 12 years in prison for selling and distributing scheduled medicine to the value of R5 million, as well as money laundering.
The sentence has been suspended for five years.
Western Cape Hawks said the doctor and his wife were arrested in 2018 during the execution of a search warrant at his place of practice.
He was found with a consignment of medicines scheduled for distribution to the United States.
The Hawks in Western Cape said the condition for suspending the sentence for five years is that the accused doesn't commit the same offence again.
The doctor, who has been identified as Bert Wolfgang Kirsten, was sentenced on Friday.
The directorate said he entered a plea agreement with the State after pleading guilty to over 1,000 counts of selling scheduled medicine and 570 counts of money laundering.
In addition to his sentence, Kirsten will be under correctional supervision for a period of three years.
His wife has since been acquitted of all the charges.
