CAPE TOWN - It's the final stretch for the city's water and sanitation teams working on a major 72-hour maintenance project in the southern suburbs.

The city said that the work, which is expected to be completed by midnight, will ensure the pipe infrastructure is in the best possible condition for years to come.

Thirty-three areas in the southern suburbs, including Grassy Park, Steenberg, Marina da Gama, Lavender Hill, Plumstead and Wynberg, have been affected by a water shutdown.

Water tankers are stationed at eleven locations.

Mayco Member for Water and Sanitation, Zahid Badroodien: "Our teams have made excellent progress - four out of six valves have already been replaced. The remaining two valves, unfortunately, are a little bit delayed because of a safety issue that was experienced on day one but all equipment is on-site and teams are ready to install those particular valves."

Badroodien said that teams started stress-testing infrastructure on Tuesday night.

"Already last night at 9'o clock our teams started to stress-test the pipes and the valves with residents in a number of areas reporting that water has started to come through their taps already, which is a very good indication that with the stress-testing underway, the valves are holding up and the pipes are holding as well."
