CAPE TOWN - A man has been handed a life sentence after pleading guilty to raping and murdering a 15-year-old girl in the southern Cape.
The Mossel Bay Regional Court has also ordered that Johan Counter's name be entered into the National Register of Sex Offenders.
The attack took place on a farm outside Groot Brakrivier in January 2023.
In his admission statement, Counter said he met the deceased when he visited his nephew and his friends at a farm in that month.
The group, including the 15-year-old-girl, had apparently been drinking.
Later that night, the accused followed the girl outside, where he pushed her to a secluded area next to a water tank and raped her before strangling her when she tried to scream.
The teenager's body was discovered the following day.
