JOHANNESBURG - Political parties in Gauteng are yet to finalise negotiations on the composition of Premier Panyaza Lesufi's Cabinet.

This is despite Lesufi previously giving parties in the Government of Provincial Unity until Wednesday to reach an agreement.

It’s been nearly two weeks since Lesufi was re-elected to Gauteng's top office, but he's yet to appoint his executive.

Eyewitness News has learnt that political parties in Gauteng were engaged in an intense meeting on Tuesday night, hoping to finally reach an agreement on the composition of Lesufi's Cabinet.

Democratic Alliance (DA) provincial chairperson Solly Msimanga confirmed the organisations were unable to reach common ground, saying another meeting was scheduled for Wednesday afternoon.

Failure to reach an agreement would defy Lesufi's order, having instructed negotiators to conclude discussions by Wednesday.

On Sunday, Lesufi postponed his Cabinet announcement after political parties requested more time to conclude their power-sharing talks.

It's understood any agreement reached in the province will also be subject to approval by both the African National Congress (ANC) and DA's national structures.
