Here are helpful hints for walkers celebrating 30 years of democracy in this years's 702 Walk the Talk in Tshwane on 28 July.

5 tips to prepare for the 2024 702 Walk The Talk

This special walk to celebrate this milestone will start at the iconic Freedom Park and then take you through several suburbs.

The route passes through Koch Street, Kgosi Mampuru Street and Sophie de Bruyn Street, then turns onto Madiba Street, ending at the Union Buildings. That's some serious walking!

To help prepare the approximately 30,000 walkers, participating in the 6.7km and the 8km stretch, we've prepared a few tips to help you prepare for the 702 Walk The Talk on 28 July 2024.

Tips for walkers

  • Avoid alcohol: Alcohol acts as a diuretic and can lead to dehydration, which is detrimental in the days leading up to the walk.
  • Limit stimulants: Caffeine, while useful for some, can also be a diuretic and disrupt sleep. It's best to limit intake to ensure optimal rest and hydration.

  • Mind your diet: Overeating can lead to weight gain, putting extra strain on your body. Focus on eating clean, avoiding sugars, and incorporating more alkaline foods to reduce inflammation risks.

  • Stay hydrated: Hydration is crucial. Hypertonic solutions are particularly effective as they maximize fluid absorption better than plain water.

  • Choose nutrient-dense meals: Opt for foods that provide sustained energy and nutritional benefits. A higher carbohydrate meal with low fibre is ideal for pre-race fuel. For instance, rolled oats with nut butter and fruit, or a banana on bread with peanut butter and honey, are excellent choices. Even those on a low-carb diet should consider including some carbohydrates. On the night before and the morning of the walk, keep fibre intake low to prevent stomach issues, as pre-race nerves can already impact digestion.

By following these tips, participants can enhance their performance and enjoy the event to the fullest.
