CAPE TOWN - Police are hunting the killers of a Philippi East South African Police Service (SAPS) member.

The 29-year-old constable was reported missing last Wednesday.

The following day, officers on patrol were flagged down by community members who found the body of a man on a field in Philippi East.

The victim had a gunshot wound to his head.

"The deceased did not have any valuables or identification in his possession. It was unknown what transpired, and robbery is suspected,” said the police's Frederick van Wyk.

"Enquiries on the scene were made, but with no positive information. On Saturday, the deceased was positively identified by his family at Salt River Mortuary as the constable from Philippi police who was reported as missing."

The murder comes amid growing concern around an increase in gun violence in Cape Town and attacks on police officers.

It also comes shortly after a 30-year-old constable was shot and killed in Khayelitsha in June.
