JOHANNESBURG - United Democratic Movement (UDM) leader Bantu Holomisa has denied being a mere extra in the Government of National Unity (GNU) which has been dubbed by some as a marriage between the Democratic Alliance (DA) and the African National Congress (ANC).

The party joined the Government of National Unity on Friday, abandoning the Progressive Caucus.

But Holomisa said that the UDM would still be playing an important role in the GNU.

"Unfortunately the UDM has no reputation of being an ice boy, so forget about that. We are going to be there to strengthen the checks and balances in that Government of National Unity. The misuse of state resources and funds channeled to one political party, that thing is going to be a thing of the past," said Holomisa.
