JOHANNESBURG - The Congress of South African Trade Unions (COSATU) said that principles guiding the Government of National Unity (GNU) should be anchored on the African National Congress (ANC) manifesto instead of other political organisations.

This despite the unity government comprising of ten parties, all with differing ideologies and policy positions.

While a statement of intent has been drawn up, the parties are yet to establish a binding framework to guide the ANC-led government.

Speaking during a media briefing in Johannesburg on Monday, COSATU general secretary, Solly Phetoe, said that some parties in the GNU pose a threat to the working class.

"COSATU remains deeply opposed to the neoliberal policies of the democratic alliance. The DA has a history of opposing all labour reforms seeking to improve the lives of workers. If the DA is to be part of the GNU, then it must abandon its anti-worker and anti-transformation agenda," said Phetoe.
